Find a Midwife

All over the world there exists in every society a small group of women who feel themselves strongly attracted to giving care to other women during pregnancy and childbirth.

Midwife listens to baby's lung sounds.

Alabama Midwives Alliance
(ALMA)
is a not-for-profit organization uniting midwife professionals and those supporting a variety of safe childbirth options. Membership is open to midwives, students, and others who wish to support caregivers providing the Midwives Model of Care in Alabama. ALMA encourages members to participate in a spirit of humility, responsibility and accountability as we work to ensure the future of midwifery in the state of Alabama.

The Midwives Model of Care

The Midwives Model of Care is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes.

The Midwives Model of Care includes:

  • Monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle
  • Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support
  • Minimizing technological interventions
  • Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention

The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.
